5 Days to a New Kitchen with White Shaker Style Cabinets

The old cabinets in this home were worn and dated with decorative rope moldings and a brown stain with a brown glaze (design tip – don’t use a brown glaze on brown cabinets, it makes them look dirty). Since the layout of the kitchen was good and the cabinets only needed a few modifications it was a perfect candidate for cabinet refacing.

What Was Done

The project took just 5 days. We removed all doors, drawers and trim and then lightly sanded the cabinet boxes.

Next we applied a 1/4 solid core panel to the cabinet boxes followed by corner trims, crown molding and scribe moldings.

On this project we modified one cabinet by installing a bank of drawers in the peninsula. We also installed soft close drawer slides and hinges. Once the modifications were complete we installed the new custom made doors and drawer fronts, installed pulls and gave the kitchen a final cleaning.

Cost

The cost of the refacing project was just under $11,500. Because refacing can be done without disturbing the existing counters and appliances the kitchen remained functional and the homeowners daily routines were largely undisturbed. We were also able to make some minor adjustments to their under-cabinet lighting and replace their electric plates so they were bright a shiny like their new cabinets!

Result

The result, as you can see from the pictures, was pretty fantastic. The kitchen feels more open and bright and the modern look will last for long long time. The new bank of drawers provided much better storage and new drawer slides and soft close hinges mean no more banging doors or drawers.

Drawer Conversion

In addition to a standard refacing the homeowner also decided to convert one of her base cabinets into a bank of drawers, a popular choice these days. Drawers make for great storage for just about anything in the kitchen as they add full access to the entire storage space.
