Understand the Remodel Timeline

A Realistic Remodel Timeline Is Important

Some contractors say, “We can start next week!” That sounds great—until they rip everything out and realize they materials are backordred or subs are backlogged.

That means your kitchen or bathroom sits unfinished while you wait on cabinets, plumbing fixtures, or appliances. And you’re stuck living in a job site for way longer than necessary.

We take a different approach. We plan very carefully, the order everthing and wait until its in-hand before we start demo. That way, your remodel moves fast and smooth, with fewer headaches along the way.

Design Isn’t Just the Pretty Part

Remodeling isn’t just about demo and dust. The planning phase can take just as long as the actual build—and it’s way more important than people think.

Let’s start with design. This part is where the magic happens.

You make decisions about:

  • Layout and floor plan
  • Cabinets, tile, flooring, paint, and appliances
  • Your budget and what’s realistic for your space

Even if you’re quick and decisive, this part usually takes 5 to 6 weeks. And if you wait until July to start? You might already be too late to finish before Thanksgiving.

Get Your Materials Moving

Some materials—especially cabinets—just take a while to show up. High quality cabinets can take 8-10 weeks and even lower quality ‘stock’ cabinets can take 2-4 weeks. Even tile and plumbing/lighting fixtures can take weeks to get.

We always recommend waiting until all materials have arrived and have been checked for damage and accuracy before starting the project.

Some Materials Are Taking Longer in 2025

Tarrifs and Potential Tarrifs are affecting demand

  • Lead times (basically how long stuff takes to show up) for materials have jumped to 8–10+ weeks

  • Backorders are more common, even for really common items homeowners pick.

  • One small delay can throw off the whole remodel timeline

The best move you can make? Start early. Give yourself time to work around the slowdowns.

Our typical Remodel Timeline

Want a peek behind the curtain? Here’s what a typical remodel timeline looks like for our clients in Tallahassee:

Weeks 1–2: Discovery + Estimate

We come to your home, take measurements, and make a 3D layout. Then we create a detailed estimate. (Check out our article on how to spot a bad estimate.)

Weeks 3–10: Design + Selections

You choose layouts, cabinets, countertops, and all the finishes. We revise until everything is just right.

Weeks 11–18: Ordering + Permits

We order cabinets and materials and apply for permits. Even small backorders can pause your progress.

Weeks 19–26: Construction

Finally! We demo your old kitchen or bathroom and build your new one. We handle everything from install to the final punch list.

What About Christmas?

Think you’ve got time to spare after Thanksgiving? Remember, Christmas is only three weeks later.

A late remodel doesn’t just mess with your schedule. It messes with your holiday spirit.

Nobody wants to decorate around sawdust or host dinner on a plywood countertop. And no one enjoys stepping over tools or unfinished trim when guests are arriving.

Remodeling is more than a project—it’s about creating a space you actually want to live in and celebrate in. So even if you’re more focused on Christmas than Thanksgiving, the message is the same: start in May or June to finish before the end of the year.
