Creating A Barrier Free Shower for Aging in Place

In this project we created a barrier free shower (curbless shower) so that as the homeowner age and need assistance walking or perhaps even a wheelchair they will have easy access to the bathroom and shower.

This started as a small bathroom divided by a wall. The vanity was on one side and the toilet and shower on the other. We removed the dividing wall, widened the bedroom door, widened the bathroom door and moved the toilet so we could create a large, barrier free shower.

Grab bars and a floating vanity were added as well.

Compromises

Remodeling is often about compromises. You’re working with an existing space and sometimes that creates design challenges. In this case we had to install the toilet just on the outside of the shower. Ideally I would have liked to move the toilet further away but there just wasn’t room.

Customer Testimonial

We would highly recommend using Paul to anyone looking to remodel. The project was finished in a timely manner and the quality is outstanding. The updates he provides daily by email were very much appreciated so we could track the project from start to finish. We look forward to working together again in the future.”

Project Cost and Timeline:

A big part of the cost of this project was the widening of the doors removal of a wall. A few of the walls were load bearing and new headers had to be inserted over over door openings. In total the project cost about $42,500 to complete and was completed in just over 5 weeks.

Sub Contractors and Suppliers

  • The Homeowners chose the tile for the walk in shower and bathroom floor from Seller’s Tile in Tallahassee

The demo, shower construction, vanity and finish work were done in house by McManus Kitchen and Bath. We also managed the project, met all sub contractors on site each day and ensured a clean, organized job site. We work with the same sub contractors regularly so they are familiar with our work style, quality demands and our emphasis on a clean, organized job site.
