It’s natural to focus on the looks of a space first but for the best long term results think about workflow and your daily routines.

Identity Driven Design vs Trend Driven Design

Identity-driven design solves a problem that many homeowners don’t realize they’re facing until it’s too late: living in a “beautiful” space that doesn’t feel like home.

Have you ever toured a home with all the latest finishes… yet something felt off or cold? According this report from Clever Real Estate, 19% of homeowners delay renovations because they fear the might regret making changes.

In this post we want to talk about the difference between trend driven design.. often embraced buy inexperienced or untrained designers… and what we’ve come to call identity driven design that focuses on understanding your needs and creating a space that just ‘feels right’.

What Is Identity Driven Design in Remodeling?

Identity driven design makes your remodel about more than trends  and more about you.

Rather than starting with what’s popular, identity driven remodeling begins with a a series of quesitons that explore how a space could serve you better.

    • How you live day to day, how you would like to improve
    • What energizes or calms you
    • What memories and moments matter most to you in your space

A lot of trends look great in magazines but they can actually be bad for workflow and your enjoyment of a space. Some trends work in specific situations, others are more universal.

The process sounds simples, and it can be, but more often it requires some focused questions and a process of asking ‘the 5 whys’ to get to the best results.

The ‘5 Whys’ is a good technique to get past old habits and think about what your ideal design might be

The 5 Whys

We can get used to anything. After living in a home for years or decades most people adapt to the layout of their homes and even bad design starts to feel normal. We become blind to the small, everday, frustration our home design might be causing.

The ‘5 whys’ is a simple technique to help get past our design predjudices and help understand what deisgn imporvemets are needed. Just like a young child might do… just keeping asking ‘why’.

Old habits can keep us from making useful changes, the identity driven design process helps break free from that.

Identity Driven vs. Trend Driven: What’s the Real Difference?

Trend driven design is about what’s popular; for inexperienced or untrained deisgners it is an easy trap to fall into. But trends are often suppy driven… material and fixture companies pushing their latest products. Trends can also be very specific… .they work in some space and in some regions but not in other.

When you remodel based on what’s trending, you risk creating a beautiful space that doesn’t actually fit your lifestyle or become dated quickly. Identity driven design flips the process starting with you, not Pinterest.

Identity-Driven Trend/Style-Driven
Starting Point Personal lifestyle, values, emotions Magazine spreads, model homes, Pinterest
Design Process Deep discovery phase to uncover who you are Fast design suggestions based on trends
Final Outcome Space that reflects your life and personality Space that looks great but may lack soul
Long-Term Fit Deep satisfaction, timeless personalization Prone to faster burnout or regret
Decision Clarity Easier to choose finishes that feel right Often second-guessing if it’s “in style”

Quick Example

Trend-Driven: “Taj Mahal Quartzite is being shown by designers all over instagram and pinterest…. I want it for my kitchen”

Identity-Driven: “I cook every day and and love to entertain, I do most of the cooking but my husband usually takes care of the clean up. We need a counter that is easy to clean and that will stand up to spills and heavy use. I love warm colors and materials that have some texture, nothing to shiny or polished”

Some people love materials that develop patina and character over time. Others want things to look clean and polished all the time.

Why Trend-Focused Remodels Often Miss the Mark

Following trends without a deeper connection often leads to short-term satisfaction and long-term regret. If you can afford to remodel every few years trends can be fun to pursue.

But if you’re like most people and will only remodel your kitchen or bathroom every 15 years then identity driven design is a better apprach.

Here are a few common issues homeowners face when they go style-first:

    • Decision fatigue from too many disconnected Pinterest boards
    • Aesthetic mismatch between their home and their lifestyle
    • Feeling “meh” about a space that technically checks all the boxes but doesn’t feel right
    • Getting board of a design just months or a few years after it’s complete

Many homeowners don’t realize they’re chasing the wrong goal until after the dust settles and they’re still not happy in their newly remodeled space.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Remodel

Self-awareness is the starting point for a remodel that truly reflects you.

Ask yourself:

  1. What are your typical daily routines?  When do you feel rushed and when do you feel like you have time to relax?
  2. What textures, colors, or environments do I feel drawn to and why?
  3. What frustrates me most about my current kitchen or bath? (use the 5 Whys)
  4. Who else shares this space with me and how are our needs different?
  5. When have I felt most “at home” in a space and what made it feel that way?

These questions start to uncover the emotional layers of design that help give a space a sense of purpose and belonging.

Beautiful finishes are a part of great design, but they should reflect your style, not trends.

Working with a Designer

A great designer doesn’t just show you what’s popular or tell you what to do. They get to know you and and ask smart questions to help you understand your needs better. The discuss the pro’s and cons of different material and fixture options.

The process of identity-driven design often includes:

    • Collaborative discovery sessions (not just style quizzes)
    • Deep listening and storytelling to uncover lifestyle needs
    • Visual tools like moodboards, not to match trends but to surface personal meaning
    • Prioritizing what’s important to you, not what’s “in” right now

Real-Life Examples: What Identity-Driven Design Looks Like

There’s no one “look” for identity-driven design — and that’s the whole point. Here are two common remodel types that looked very different:

Example 1: The Family-Focused Cook

    • Needed durable materials, lots of prep space, warm lighting
    • Chose soft oak cabinets, quartz countertops, and an oversized island for hosting
    • Rejected the trendy minimalist look because it felt “cold”

Example 2: The Wellness-Minded Professional

    • Wanted calm and simplicity after long workdays
    • Chose organic textures, muted tones, and a clutter-free layout
    • Built in a spa-style bath with aromatherapy lighting

Work schedules, family responsibilities, hobbies and personal habits all impact the design of your home

Is Identity-Driven Design Right for You?

If you want more than a pretty kitchen or bath, if you want a space that works for you and just ‘feels right’, identity-driven design is worth exploring.

If you just want something that looks good and need to get it done quickly then you might want to work with a designer more focused on templates and cookie cutter designs that reflect current trends.

Identity driven design might be for you if:

    • You’ve remodeled in the past and still didn’t love the result
    • You feel overwhelmed by styles and want more clarity
    • You value long-term meaning and connection in your home

It might not be the right fit if:

    • You’re flipping or staging a house with short term, mass appeal in mind
    • You want something fast and are okay copying what’s current
    • You’re working with a very rigid design package or prefab builder
