Project Summary

A mold issue from a leaky had to be mitigated resulting in the shower having to be torn out. The homeowners took the opportunity to expand the bathroom in to the garage to create a larger barrier free shower and bigger vanity. We also created a space for a seated furniture vanity which the homeowner added later on. We also did some minor updated to the master bedroom, adding crown molding, window trim and new wall paint. The whole master suite remodel took about 8 weeks from start to finish.

Challenges

In general the project went quite smoothly. We had to cut into the slab to run new plumbing for the shower and toilet and relocate the electric panel. There weren’t any significant delays.

Favorite items

There were a few nice splurges on this project that are hard to see from pictures.

Underfloor heating

Underfloor heating:

She was always cold in the mornings, even in the summer. The underfloor heating in the bath was a splurge (about $15/sq ft installed) but it has made her shower experience so much better. The warmly yours system is great because it works automatically on a pre-set schedule and can be controlled wirelessly from your phone.

Towel Warmer:

Do your towels get a musty smell after a day or two of use? A towel warmer can help with that. Towel warmers dry your towels faster so they don’t get that musty smell. The warmers we installed from Warmly Yours are set on a timer so they are not running all day. They can also be turned on as needed and will shut of after 30 min.

Recessed Jewelry box

To save space we recessed a large jewelry box into the back wall of the closet.

Marble Flower Mosaic

We used a large 24×24 marble look porcelain tile on the floor (made by emser tile). This is an economical tile, about $3/sq ft, and looks great. We wanted to add some ‘wow factor’ to the design so we splurged on a 4’x5′ mosaic rug in a water jet tile made from marble. That flower pattern mosaic cost about $45/ sq ft but since there was only 20 sq ft of that tile it was not a budget buster.
